A Lot of Heat From a Little Wood
A good wood stove can warm a whole living area with a few logs. When an ice storm knocks out power across Dallas, it keeps working. For a workshop, a den or a home out past the city gas lines, it is hard to beat.
But a wood stove is not a plug-in appliance. It gets very hot, and so does the pipe above it. Most stove fires trace back to the installation: a pipe too close to a wall, the wrong pipe through a ceiling, or no pad under the stove.
Dallas Chimney Care installs wood stoves in Dallas, TX, with the pipe, chimney and hearth protection each stove calls for.
What a Safe Wood Stove Installation Includes
The right location
We place the stove where it heats the room well and where the chimney can run as straight as possible. Straight chimneys draft better and stay cleaner.
Clearances
Every stove lists how far it must sit from walls, furniture and trim. We follow the maker’s label and add heat shields where they help.
Hearth protection
A non-combustible pad goes under the stove and extends out in front of the door.
Stove pipe and chimney
Inside the room we use stove pipe. Where the system passes through a ceiling, attic or roof, it changes to insulated chimney pipe made for that purpose. If you are venting into a masonry fireplace, we run a stainless steel liner up the flue.
Cap and flashing
The top gets a cap to keep out rain and animals, and roof flashing that stays watertight.
How Wood Stove Installation Works
- Site visit. We look at the room, the roof and any existing chimney.
- Plan and written price. You see where the stove and pipe will go and what it costs.
- Install. Pad, stove, pipe, chimney and cap.
- First fire. We light it, check the draft and show you how to run the stove and the air controls.
Burn It Clean
Dry, seasoned wood and a hot fire make more heat and far less creosote. The EPA explains what to look for in its guide to choosing the right wood-burning stove.
Plan on a chimney sweep at least once a year. Stove pipes collect creosote faster than open fireplaces.
Is a Wood Stove the Right Upgrade?
A wood stove is about heating. If you mostly want the look of a fire, a gas log set or a new fireplace installation may suit you better. If you want real warmth from wood burning, a stove is far more efficient than an open fireplace, and it can heat the main living space of a home.
For a homeowner planning a remodel, it helps to choose the stove early, because the vent path decides where it can go. We do not sell a single brand, and we will tell you plainly what will work in your room. Every installation ends with an inspection of the whole system, and yearly chimney sweeping keeps it safe after that.
